When Women and Development holds its annual garage sale this weekend to raise money for projects that benefit women and children in developing countries, the fundraiser will include a project with a local link
In January, when the members met over brunch to allocate funds, Bridgitt Sloan McMullen proposed that the group supply money to put in a hand washing station, build a fence and equip a supply cupboard for a small school of 130 children in Ghana
The school's sole source of financing is a tourist camp run by a local entrepreneur
While working in Ghana for 18 months with World University Services Canada, Bridgitt saw the school on a weekend getaway
After talking with the teachers, she wanted to help and will work with the camp owner and school staff to build school infrastructure up to the point where it can receive state money
Women and Development members are canvassing friends and digging into basements and attics to make the garage sale a bonanza event. The giant garage sale goes from 7 a.m. to noon April 24 at 4519 Soucie Ave
